Global Interdependency, the university and your virtual internship Stakeholder Analysis

August 14th, 2020

First, we start on the micro-level: the relationship between me and the company employees at Azul. Their level of participation and interest in the project will be the highest of all the stakeholders. They determine the work that is to be done by me and they are the ones who will determine whether the work was completed successfully or not. Their influence and power is also the highest since they are the ones who hired me. The best practice for communication with the Azul employees is to be formal but also open and friendly. By being formal I can establish a sense of respect for my employers. At the same time, by being open and friendly we can create an environment which we will feel more free to give feedback, ask questions, and communicate more often.

Government regulators and airline shareholders have a medium level of participation. They are not involved on a daily basis with the management of the airline. Their interest is high. The government makes sure that the airline operates safely while shareholders rely on the airline for income. Both their influence and power is high. The government sets the laws, which the airline needs to follow, and the shareholders can determine, to an extent, who works in the airline and who does not (at least in the higher-level positions). The airline needs to be formal with both stakeholders.

Fuel companies, aircraft manufacturers, and financial institutions have a lower level of participation. Their interest is also low, except for the aircraft manufacturers which want to please the airlines by creating products that they would purchase. Fuel companies and financial institutions have much power as they can determine the financial situation of the airline. For example, if fuel prices are high, airlines cannot avoid paying those prices as fuel is necessary for their operation. Aircraft manufacturers have less power, however since their industry is an oligopoly, they can have much power just due to the fact that airlines do not have many choices to choose from.

The work that me and the company do affect the customers of the company. Their level of participation in the company and their interest are low. Their influence however is higher. Without customers, the airline does not have revenue. As such, they influence the prices that the airline sets to flights, which in turn influences the project I am working on. There is no interaction between myself and the customers, while the airline needs to be respectful to passengers to create a positive relationship and that of trust.

Nectarios-Nicholas,

I am coming to your post just after reading Sophia's. Sophia is working with an organization in Vienna that helps refugees to Austria. The organizations that you work for are different on so many levels, but thinking about it from a stakeholder perspective only, the difference is so stark. There are so many stakeholders involved here, and you do a great job of breaking down their position and interest specifically with Azul. Discussing power with this stakeholder map is also so complicated-- there is so much interdependence. From the overall global economy to the employee organization to other industries from which Azul must purchase essential goods, it's hard to indicate clear hierarchies. All of this interdependence made even more apparent in a global pandemic that halts air travel and local, national, and global economies. Great job in breaking all of this down into a clear map!

Since Then

At the end of the internship I was glad to hear that the airline revenue management team would use our work and apply it to their model. As such, the work I did in my team will actually have an impact to all of these stakeholders.
